A 100 Year Old Box Was Found In Antarctica, Inside Was a Discovery of a Lifetime

While restoring an exploration hut in Antarctica, Conservators of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust discovered something incredible. A box containing 22 negatives from an unsuccessful expedition a century ago.

The photos were believed to be from Ernest Shackleton’s 1914-1917 Ross Sea Party, a failed exploration that forced members of the team to live in Scott’s hut after their ship blew out to sea during a blizzard. The group was eventually rescued but not before losing three men.

Because of the age and nature of the cellulose nitrate negatives, great care had to be taken to process and restore them. But it was worth it because the photos provided an amazing glimpse at Antarctica 100 years ago.

You can see the rest of the photos at the Trust’s website.
