Unable To Speak, Her Grandmother Left Cryptic Notes Before Her Death. 18 Years Later, It Was Finally Decoded

In 1996, Janna Holm’s grandmother, Dorothy Holm, spent her final days battling brain cancer. Unable to speak in her last two weeks, she filled at least 20 index cards with seemingly random letters. Janna and her cousin, who were between 8 and 10 at the time, believed she was leaving them a code. Months were spent fruitlessly trying to decipher the cards. Eventually, they gave up.

18 years later, Janna’s father found one of the cards and she decided to take another crack at it. This time, she was able to enlist the help of the internet. She posted images of the front and back of the card on Metafilter and asked for help.

This was the front of the card. It read:

PDGNHBOBVPNSNHANAOENCNANHPNCPND,NUOCP

This is the back of the card. This one read:

1. OFWAIHHBTNTKCTWBDOEAIIIHFUTDODBAFUOT
AWFTWTAUALUNITBDUFEFTITKTPATGFAEA
2. OFWAIHHBTNTKCTWBDOEAIIIHFUTDODBAFUOT
AWFTWTAUALUNITBDUFEFTITKTPATGFAEA

Within a mere 15 minutes, the code was cracked. As it turns out, each letter represents the first letter of a word in a prayer. The back of the card was easily deciphered as the Lord’s Prayer repeated (Our Father who art in heaven … For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.).

The front was a little more difficult but what was deciphered so far seems to be a personal prayer from her grandmother to God before she passed.

The entire thread is a fascinating read and shows how even though she was suffering from brain cancer, her grandmother still managed to find a way to communicate.
