William Hung, thanks for the memories

/

Do you remember where you were when you first saw William Hung? Probably you were watching “American Idol”, shot up from your couch and thought, “Holy crap! It’s an Asian on American Idol!! This guy is awesome.” Your next thought was just how many stereotypes you’d be hearing in the next week.

No matter what, William Hung is a touchstone for the Asian population. He’s the Asian Tiny Tim. And he’ll always be remembered fondly. So, it’s with a heavy heart, I bring you sad news. William Hung has retired from show business. Let’s bow our heads in prayer. Just like a great quarterback who hangs it up at their peak, this idol has decided to leave the world of groupies and autograph hounds and enter the world of education.

Hung is currently enrolled at Cal State Northridge to pursue a bachelor’s in math education. According to the Daily Sundial, the school’s newspaper, Hung has his reasons for this new career path.

“I think teaching is more exciting. I get to learn and teach something new everyday,” said Hung. “I enjoy helping young children succeed. I enjoy tutoring. I just really enjoy the experience of teaching.”

Yea yea, inspiring kids, whatever. When was the last time a girl wanted to blow you because you knew fractals? Right, never.

After reading the article, you see him as a very decent person who had this brief, flash of stardom. Now, he’s content to leave it all behind for the civilian life. He never compromised himself, presented his true self to the world and gained fans as a result. So, it’s not too much of a stretch to call him a role model. Let’s give William Hung his props. Rest in peace brother.
