“Kung Fu Panda” waddles into Cannes tonight
The new animated film, Kung Fu Panda, has its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival tonight and features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Lucy Liu. Was Lucy Liu included to fill their Asian quota? The movie is set in China and does feature pandas. The studio was probably worried about protests from the Asian community. We want our voices heard! Literally.
Anyway, no word yet on if they will push back the release date (currently June 6th) out of respect for the real pandas in China. The recent earthquake has destroyed the natural habitat of the two largest panda reserves in China. CNN reports:
Bamboo, the pandas’ primary source of food, is a major agricultural product in the region, but whether it can be supplied to the pandas despite infrastructure damage is open to question.
What will they eat?
“Artificial diets in the form of protein biscuits have been created for giant pandas. They’re not a complete substitute, but they meet the needs of a basic high-fiber diet,” said [David] Wildt, who has worked with two pandas that the Smithsonian [National Zoological Park] has on loan from Wolong.
Sucks for the pandas. First, the earthquake. Then two words that should be a warning for any mammal. Biscuit and fiber. If personal experience is any indication, those pandas will be crapping up a storm every 30 minutes.
