One South Carolinian lost his job, faces a hefty fine and now has a criminal record over an $.89 soda refill. Christopher Lewis works on-site at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. This past Wednesday, he went back for seconds on a drink, not noticing signs informing patrons that refills weren’t free.
As I was filling my cup up, I turned to walk off and a fella grabbed me by the arm and asked me was I going to pay for that, and I told him I wasn’t aware that I had to pay for that.
Turns out that ‘fella’ was the Chief of Police. Lewis claimed he never noticed the signs and offered to pay. However, his offer was refused. The Chief of Police escorted Lewis to a back room, gave him a $525 ticket for shoplifting and barred him from setting foot on the property ever again.
Not good, since Lewis works on-site at the VA Medical Center as a construction worker.
I’m done there, at the VA hospital. I’m not allowed to go on the premises anymore. I asked him can I still work on the job site and just bring my lunch and not got to the cafeteria and he said he wanted me off the premises.
Lewis plans to fight the charge of ‘theft of government property’ in federal court.
There are rules and then there’s insanity. Share this man’s story if you agree.
