John Woo’s epic movie, Red Cliff, received its coming out party at the recent Cannes Film Festival. A special nine minute promo was screened. They would’ve shown the whole movie, if only it wasn’t four hours long. Trust me, no butt should sit in a theater seat for that long. Ever. Anyway, some sly filmgoer surreptitiously filmed the promo and voila, now it’s on the intertube. Luckily, the video isn’t ruined by anyone eating popcorn or standing up in front of the camera.
Takeshi Kanehiro, Tony Leung, Zhao Wei and Lin Chi-Ling star in this $80 million movie. That’s what you call an all-star cast. Still no American distributor, but if the studios can release classics like Speed Racer and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, then certainly they can find a spot for this movie.
One of Korea’s finest directors talked about his latest film, Thirst, to CNN. Unfortunately, he gave away its ending, so you might want to fast forward through the first two minutes of the video.
According to BeyondHollywood, the plot centers on the following:
a man who gets the wrong blood transfusion and becomes a vampire as a result; now he’s thirsty for human blood, which is bad enough, but he ends up falling in love with a woman.
If you’ve seen his older movies, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Old Boy, you might surmise this new one is more Bram Stoker’s Dracula than George Hamilton’s Love at First Bite. After all, Park changed the movie name from Evil Live to its current incarnation, Thirst. The plot also answers a crucial question: would you rather be a blood-sucker or marry one?
NY1.com celebrates Asian Heritage Week by profiling Korean hitmaker Jin Young Park (JYP). His latest sensation, Wonder Girls, hit the top of the Korean charts with “So Hot”. Beyond the Wonder Girls, JYP also has a couple of other proteges lined up.
The first girl is the 16-year-old girl called Min that I co-produced for Lil John,” said Park. The next artist is this 25-year-old R-and-B musician called J Lim that I’m co-producing. And there’s G-Soul, a 19-year-old soul singer that R. Kelly decided to work with.
Hopefully, Lil’ John doesn’t lead Min astray and offer her drinks from his pimp cup. I’m more concerned about G-Soul. “Working with” R. Kelly could just be a euphemism for “oh crap, R. Kelly is peeing on my head”.
Steven Spielberg’s studio, Dreamworks, has gone on a spending spree for Asian movies. Last month, they bought Ghost in the Shell. They’ve also produced The Ring, The Ring 2 and next year’s remake of A Tale of Two Sisters. Recently, Steven Spielberg also picked up Yomigaeri, the Japanese sci-fi/horror film from 2003. This Japanese Academy Award winner tells the story of:
a government official who is sent to a rural town to investigate a child who, after vanishing for 60 years, returns to his mother not having aged at all.
Furthermore,
the world has become intensively information oriented and humans are well-connected to the network. Crime has developed into a sophisticated stage by hacking into the interactive network. To prevent this, Section 9 is formed. These are cyborgs with incredible strengths and abilities that can access any network on Earth.
Beautiful. Steven, I combined the plots of Ghost in the Shell and Yomigaeri and just wrote your next big blockbuster.
The success of Rock Band and Guitar Hero has left the industry looking to milk their cash cow. Hot on last week’s announcement of the European release of Rock Band, now comes word that your fav JRock tunes may make their way into the video game also. Xorsyst (via Joystiq) writes that an announcement has been set for the following week. Good news for all you TM Revolution fans out there. Personally, I would love to see Do as Infinity included. Nevertheless, whatever bands they do include will be special. Finally, something thing to do while you cosplay.
Lee Hyori has been in the news quite a bit. Recently, she disembarked to Hawaii to record her newest album. This one drops in June and according to POPSEOUL!, it features Eric of Shinhwa and Wheesung.
Thanks to ZR5 Asian News, the above pics of Lee Hyori come from her new ad campaign to promote animal protection agencies. Hence, the “We Love Dog” shirt. I’m way too witty to make the obvious joke about Asians and dogs. Also, I’m way too mature to make a joke about protecting the beavers. I’m just creeped out by the eyeless dog Lee is holding. Is that what it takes to get a hug from Lee Hyori? I guess I’ll just throw away this fan letter and lock of hair.
