The Polar Vortex Led To Freezes, Snowstorms And Chaos. And Amazing Images Of Brilliance

The polar vortex has slammed into the South like Brock Lesnar in his prime. Five dead in Alabama. Twelve hour traffic delays in Atlanta. Cars sliding into each other on roads Southerners describe as cold glass.

But there’s beauty in chaos. A data visualizer, “Earth”, takes wind speeds and temperatures from overhead and animates them visually.

The site is fully interactive and quite mesmerizing. Visitors can zoom in and out on the wind patterns. The lines represent the wind. The colors represent temperatures. The closer the lines, the faster the wind. Blues, greens and purples indicate colder areas.

Mother Earth can be cruelly powerful and simply stunning.
